Drinking the right amount of water can do wonders for muscle growth, weight loss, and overall health. Staying hydrated helps to lubricate your joints and reduce inflammation so you can get a smooth, comfortable workout. Hydrating your muscles leads to more rapid growth and speeds up recovery time when you’re feeling sore, so you never have to take a rest day due to pain. Burning fat is also significantly easier and faster when you’re hydrated.

Weight lifters should be drinking more water than the average person to supplement their workouts. To figure out how much water a day is best for you, take two thirds of your body weight in pounds, and drink that many ounces. So if you’re 240 pounds, you should be drinking approximately 160 ounces of water every day.

If you’re a person who doesn’t like drinking so much water, remember that you can reach your daily water intake goals in other ways. Drinks like juices, sports drinks, or coconut water, and water-rich foods can help you get there. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, berries, celery, tomatoes, oranges, spinach, peaches, grapefruit, cantaloupe and cucumbers are all packed with water. Other foods like plain yogurt, soup, and cottage cheese are also smart snack choices when you’re trying to get hydrated.
