Here are the basic steps to a barbell curl.

  1. Hold the barbell with an underhand grip keeping your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. Squeeze your biceps, raise the bar slowly to your shoulders, and hold it at the top for a moment.
  3. Slowly lower the bar to the starting position, and repeat.

Before you begin, make sure your abs are tight, back is straight, and chest is slightly raised. Keep your movements slow and controlled, and only move your forearms in order to make the most of the exercise.

Stabilize your hips and try not to swing them. Using momentum, while it feels easier, is cheating yourself. You’ll work out for just as long but only get half the results.

The barbell curl, especially when done correctly, is the perfect exercise to grow and strengthen your biceps.
